Maine is the largest of the 6 New England states in the northeastern region of the United States, with 86,156 square kilometers (33,265 square miles), including the inland water area. The state is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick, and bounded on the west by New Hampshire.

Winter temperature is 20° F (-7° C) on average, with around 100 clear days per year, and only 70 in the north. Rain precipitation averages 36 to 48 inches (910 to 1,220 millimeters) per year and snowfall averages more than 100 inches in the north region and at the state's higher elevations.

The third most spoken language in the region is Spanish at 0.8%, followed by German at 0.3%, with a minority of Italian at 0.1%.
